Internships With Homeland Security and Emergency Management

The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) has internships available throughout the year.

Our interns gain valuable professional experience in a fast-paced environment while assisting in carrying out the mission of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, that is, coordinating resources with federal, state and local partners; ensuring the State has a complete operational picture; and building and maintaining the State’s capability to respond to actual and potential human-caused and natural disasters.

HSEM interns strengthen their fundamental understanding of emergency management concepts while completing specific projects for the different sections within HSEM, including Field Services, Operations, Planning, Tech Hazards and Public Information.

Interns will also assist with internal agency functions and the daily operations of the Emergency Operations Center, such as inventory management, development of procedures and user guides, maintenance of disaster management software, database coordination, continuity of operations plans, and other projects as needed. Interns may assist in developing and publicizing a variety of ongoing and future media campaigns, writing and editing press releases, preparing talking points, monitoring social media and preparing social media messages, preparing and editing web materials, monitoring legislative interests and projects, and other projects as needed.

To apply, applicants must either be enrolled in an accredited college or university undergraduate or graduate program or have a degree. Degrees in homeland security, emergency management, public administration, marketing, communications or a related field are recommended though any major is welcome to apply. All applications will be considered.

A criminal background check will be required prior to receiving an official offer. Internships are unpaid and are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week at the Incident Planning and Operations Center in Concord.
